Repoussé Faces(this page under construction) |
Although most of our work focuses on abstract, non-representational compositions, David has recently begun doing some figurative work in brass and copper, for the first time in more than twenty-five years. The masks are made freehand, by the process known as repoussé. No forms are used: rather, David hammers a sheet of copper into a firm sandbag, working from both sides, using different shapes of hammer and punch. The image builds slowly, over several rounds of hammering and reheating. |

We incorporate repoussé faces in larger wallpieces, where they are usually formed in fuller relief. These faces are individually numbered, separate from the wallpiece as a whole. Others, in lower relief, are made up as individual modular wallpiece tiles. For simple single-panel wallpieces, similar to our scrap wallpieces, David sometimes makes very small faces. Occasionally faces are incorporated into other sorts of piece as well, and we intend to continue using faces in new designs of all sorts. Follow the links below to see the faces in all these contexts. |
